Mitch Philistin was the Haitian steward on board the Galaxy, the Radio London ship. He crossed the Atlantic with the ship and worked there throughout the station's life. The disc-jockeys frequently mentioned him on air and he became a firm favourite with the listeners. Some of these pictures have been magnified from a contact sheet and, as a result, are a bit blurred; others have deteriorated over the four decades since they were taken. But they all give a fascinating insight into life on board the Radio London ship. The Pirate Radio Hall of Fame is very grateful to Mitch for sharing these pictures with us and to Duncan Johnson for his assistance. |
Mike Lennox, left, and the man himself, Mitch, looking extremely dapper. |
Left to right: Gaby Collins, Big L's original merchandising man, Mitch, airtime salesman and later Programme Director Alan Keen. |
It is Christmas and Tony Windsor has a bottle of beer, a not uncommon sight but this time the bottle still has its top on! |
Clockwise round the table from the front left: ship's administrator Richard Swainson, Kenny Everett, Tony Windsor and Captain Buninga enjoying their Christmas meal. |
The camera moved but if you squint you can see Kenny Everett, left, and Chuck Blair. |
Mitch, left, Duncan Johnson, right, with a guest on the ship. There is another picture of the guest here. Behind Mitch is the relief captain and just visible, left on the upper deck, is one of the original crew, a man from Honduras. Can anyone give us his name? |
