The Good Guys at the Fun Fair

Colin writes: “These photos relate to an idea of mine. There was an annual charity function at Battersea Fun Fair organised by the Variety Club of Great Britain. Celebrities were invited to appear. It was the usual round-up: David Jacobs, Pete Murray and so on. I contacted the organisers and asked if we Caroline crew could attend and was refused. That was a red rag. I set up announcements on Caroline that we'd be there and we all turned up, paid our entry and went in. The result was bedlam as the photos show. One up for the pirates! I think it must have been early summer 1965.”

We asked if anyone else had memories to share of visiting Battersea Fun Fair that day in 1965 and Geoff Prett got in touch: “The date was Saturday 29 May 1965. It was a few days before my 14th birthday and I and seven school friends travelled from Reading to partake in the event. It was almost certainly in response to the announcements on Caroline, as we were all avid listeners. Alas I do not remember much about the day except that Battersea Park was packed and the ‘good guys’ were probably the most approachable celebrities. I attach a file with copies of Colin Nicol's and Jon Sydney's autographs that I obtained on the day.”
