The Pirate Radio Hall of Fame was delighted to hear from legendary offshore disc-jockey Andy Archer.
Andy wrote: “I recently found this photograph of “The O'Rahilly”, Ronan's beloved grandfather. His great hero. Thought you might like to use it.”
The Ronan he refers to is, of course, Ronan O'Rahilly, the founder of Radio Caroline - the station on which Andy worked for many years.
Ronan's grandfather, Michael Joseph O'Rahilly (22nd April 1875 - 29th April 1916), was known as “The O'Rahilly”. He was an Irish republican who took part in the Easter Rising, despite his opposition to it. He lost his
life in a charge on a British machine gun post.
Michael had six children Bobby, Richard, Aodogán, Niall, Maolmhuire and Ruairí. Aodogán was Ronan's father.
The poet W.B Yeats wrote a poem about him called The O'Rahilly.
