Swinging Radio England Fun 50, 24th September 1966

Terje Isberg was a Swedish listener to the British offshore stations. He was a fan of Johnnie Walker in particular and would frequently record his shows. He has compiled this Swinging Radio England Fun 50 by listening back to tapes he made in 1966 (see here too). Can anyone fill in the blanks or clear up the uncertainties?

* Terje is uncertain about these positions. It wasn't always easy to hear the distant radio signal clearly through the late night interference and atmospherics. He thinks Johnnie said The Excels record was at number 6 but can't be sure. He also thinks Johnnie mentioned two different records as being at number 16; and he isn't 100% positive that Otis Redding was at number 15. Finally he couldn't make out if the Shades of Blue record was at number 24 or 34. Can anyone help?

We are not aware of The Excels' record being released in the UK. It came out on the independent Carla label in the States and was popular in the band's home state of Michigan. According to the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends website, “Gonna Make You Mine, Girl” reached number 1 on the Super Sound Survey of (radio station) WSAM in Saginaw. Swinging Radio England often featured American releases but it is not known how this particular record ended up being championed by the station. Did one of the American DJs bring it across the Atlantic with him? Or maybe the guys on the ship heard it played on Gary Stevens' daily show, recorded in New York City, and decided to give it wider exposure. If you want a reminder of the song, it can be heard on YouTube. Shades Of Blue were also from Michigan but their track “Oh How Happy”, written by Edwin Starr, was a genuine US national hit, reaching number 12 on the Billboard chart.

Many thanks to Terje Isberg for this chart. Can anyone fill in the blanks?

The links from the songs on this page lead to the Amazon MP3 Store where you can hear short audio clips of the tracks and customers in the UK can buy downloads. Please see this note.
