Shivering Sands fort was built during the Second World War as one of a chain of maritime structures installed to defend London and the Thames estuary from attacks by the German Luftwaffe. These photos, from Chris Warren's collection, date from 1942 and show the forts being constructed in Gravesend. The completed fort consisted of a group of seven connected towers with the anti-aircraft guns and a searchlight mounted on their roofs, as seen in the left photo on the second row. |
