Red Sands Fort, summer 2003

Red Sands Fort, an anti-aircraft installation off the coast of Kent, was home to three offshore radio stations during the sixties: Radio Invicta, King Radio and Radio 390. The buildings are still there although they are in bad condition and the connecting walkways have been torn down. During the beautiful summer of 2003 correspondent Derek Smith and his wife went out on a cruise aboard the sailing barge Greta from Whitstable. The trip took them round Red Sands. These are Derek's photographs.

Many thanks to Derek for sharing his photos. He says: “It was a good trip and I would recommend it to anyone interested in seeing the forts close-up. I nearly made it aboard 390 many years ago. Unfortunately the weather turned while I was being ferried out with a couple of other ‘lucky’ people and we had to turn back. After that I never seemed to have enough time and they closed down before I could repeat the effort. Such is life I am afraid.”
